"What is up with that?"

One of the things I notice is that a lot of people will draw or write something stating that it's just for fun and something they whipped up at a moment's notice, just for the heck of it.  They don't do it as part of a grand idea that they have in mind, but they do it on the spur of the moment.  While I find that usually, these efforts are far greater than any of the planned work that I've ever done, I'm actually more baffled by the idea that people are able to make pieces purely for fun and not connected to a larger narrative.

Do I make things for fun?  Yes, I do, but I will say that every, yes, every word that I've written, every sprite that I've edited, and even the ArtPad pieces that were me goofing around weren't just empty fun.  Each piece, no matter how "fluff" or parodic it was, had an intent or a backstory beyond what was visible to the viewer.

So, I'm going to lay this as an open challenge.  If there is anything of mine -- icon, avatar, fanfic, sprite -- that you would like to know more about, please ask me, and I will answer to the fullest of my capability.

Even her explosion is beautiful...

The short answer is that it's an attempt to Frankensprite a Midnight Blissed Launch Octopus, and also a jab a Nadya Suleman. She got on my nerves.

The longer answer is as follows, I was thinking up ideas for a Darkstalkers/Mega Man X crossover. I thought it would be interesting if the "monsters" of yesteryear were juxtaposed against the "evolution" of reploids, and humanitiy's role with respect to the boogeymen (realm of the mystical and magical) and the Pandora's Box they've opened through reploids (realm of technology and "science")

Of course, I was thinking of ways of evening the playing field between the Darkstalkers and the various reploids. The problem is while Darkstalkers are incredibly powerful, they are biological creatures, however magically powered and in many cases ageless. Also, given that the Darkstalkers all vary in personality, it wouldn't be as simple as some of the Darkstalkers protecting their food source (humans). There'd also be a tricky situation as to how to deal with the more destructive ones. As magical creatures, are they human-like enough to warrant being treated as humans, or are they monstrous enough to be designated acceptable targets for the Maverick Hunters if they're endangering human lives. And of course, we don't need to go into the idea of Morrigan being surrounded by gendered males whom she could not seduce.

Of course, I figured out there had to be some conflict other than "Darkstalkers show up and craziness happens." Demitri wants power, and of course he'd be the most opposed to Sigma's plan as not only would he like to rule, but Sigma's genocide would cut off Demitri's food supply. But Sigma would outclass him Demitiri in a fight, but Demitri has the Midnight Bliss move, a comedic method of temporarily turning an opponent into an attractive female humanoid.

Sigma, of course, wouldn't fall for such a trick. But you can't say the same of the eight pawns, and I could see Demitri either dispatching or turning Mavericks into a potential food source and eye-candy. How permanent the transformation is isn't clear as it could be just for a few minutes, or perhaps until Demitri himself is KOed. Furthermore, some of the Midnight Bliss transformations indicate it's just as change in form, and others a change of personality. I had toyed with Demitri eventually having the eight as his new harem in a forced change of allegiance, then abandon them when the others close in on him, ripping their throats out one by one in a mass feeding, but then I'd have to figure out if they died then, or if they were rescued like the Dolls (or more like Rose in SFA3's ending the hunters would take the unconscious female forms to safety, only to later discover who they are...and meanwhile, Since Sigma doesn't have his eight generals, he's going to have to activate the B-Squad six months early).

Since I don't have the vision to write this, I thought that if I at least sprited a few of the ideas, it would get out of my system. I based the blissed Launch Octopus off Rikuo's Midnight Blissed form, and added Shuma-Gorath's tentacles to the bottom. This was harder than the final effort shows, because I wanted to get six tentacles at the bottom and two arms, but it was hard to copy and paste it in a way to prevent the octo-lady from being too "burdened." This one took several days to get right, and it's still not perfect. I tried to stay close to the Launch palette, and tried to abide by the unwritten rules of a midnight blissed transformation (Huitzil shows that anything too mechanical just gets converted into an organic form, anyway. I wish there was some way I could have kept the missiles).

This is the only sprite edit of this series I actually finished and am not entirely ashamed of (I palette swapped Lilith for Chill Penguin, but it's awful). I'm not a good enough spriter to make the others, but this one sprite represents a germ of an idea that never came to life...It's a silly idea anyway, but I can't help but think of it every time I see the sprite.
