Way to make me feel worse, guys...

Apr. 7th, 2013 | 03:03 am

So LiveJournal is deciding to join the whole social media crowd and is now assigning users social capital.

Does not LiveJournal realize the reason why I still use the service is that even though I have few followers and few friends, I can write my occasional entries and have a false sense of importance. Maybe no one will read my entries as I write them, but someone may stumble upon them, at least I hope.

Thanks for making me feel even more worthless than I already do.

It's not quite the same. Klout is a way of measuring "social capital" but it's an optional, external service that can be used across different social media platforms. I do have it connected to my Twitter (which is more popular than any of my other social media services, except maybe YouTube), but I've never redeemed anything from it.

LiveJournal is using social capital to assign communities and users a ranking, which means the more popular you are, the more visible you will be to people searching for you. To be fair, in a way that's the way it has always been unofficially, but I don't like being told by a blogging platform I'm worthless. Most of the people who've stuck with LiveJournal have done so because it isn't social media madness, and while there are memes and such, the service encourages people to write and opine instead of regurgitate. On the other hand, everything's going Tumblr, a medium where visuals rule over words.

Maybe I'm just being cranky for no reason.
