Frustrated Fantasy Tactics

Well, I've been chugging along at Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, I'm stuck at the monastery because this jackass Isuld or whatever his name is keeps doing 120+ damage to my characters by himself. This is almost as bad as beating that fat bastard at the end of the last chapter, where it took me literally ten times to beat him simply because he could kill all my characters in one attack.

Why does this game force you into battles like this and leave you with no retreat option whatsoever? Final Fantasy Tactics has such a great story by far (waaay better than any tactics game, even the Fire Emblems I've played), and yet the gameplay is SOOO screwed against the player. It's like they know I want to see how this story is going to unfold, and wave it in front of my face like a carrot while I have to rely on pure luck to beat an enemy that is a good three or four levels ahead of me. That's not strategy. That's gambling.
